In a video shared to TikTok by one of the dog owners, posting under the handle mable_thelab, a black Labrador called Mable and a yellow one called Lilo can be seen vigorously sparring with their seemingly playful fighting in danger of spilling over into something a bit more serious.

According to an onscreen caption, the clip was posted online to highlight the “reality” of regularly mixing two Labradors of a similar age. While the two pups appear eager to play with one another, there’s certainly a little edge to their grappling.

The clip, which has been viewed nearly 190,000 times online, can be viewed here.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), it’s entirely normal for young pups to play in this way and it helps them “learn bite inhibition and good dog manners.”

“It is good exercise and socialization for them and fun for us to watch,” said the AKC. “But you should learn how to tell the difference between playing and a real fight when adult dogs are involved.”

The AKC says there are several physiological indicators dog owners should be on the lookout for that will indicate if playfighting has become more serious.

The dogs’ bodies may stiffen up while the hairs on their upper back, otherwise known as the hackles, may also be raised. Any dog exhibiting a closed mouth, curled lip, low warning growl could also be an indicator as is any expression that sees the ears pinned flat with lips curled while snarling.

The movement of the dogs would also likely change from bouncing with tails wagging to quick and efficient movements with tails tucked in.

From the looks of the video shared by Mable’s owner, these two canines appear to still be on friendly terms. While there is some bearing of teeth, their sparring involves the two dogs bouncing around with little of the quick, efficient movement noted by the AKC.

Mable initially has the upper hand against Lilo, but the tables quickly turn with the other dog gaining the advantage as the pair trade playful blows back and forth.

While it’s not exactly the cute and cuddly relationship their sibling owners may have been hoping for, most pet fans commenting on the video could see little wrong with the clip. “They’re playing,” Hilary Stewart Rowel said. “Looks like they’re having a great time.”

“Yeah they’re playing bitey face… their favorite game,” Designated Humanist added. “They look fine to me, both have their tails up.” Aquaberryx was of a similar mindset, urging the dog owners not to worry. “It can look and sound demonic, but it’s normal,” they wrote.

Some, however, felt maybe Mable was telling Lilo to back off and more should be done to reinforce her wishes. “The yellow dog isn’t really listening to the black dog, so I would suggest teaching the yellow to stop playing once the black gives off signs it,” dingotookthebaby said. ZoeBoeDoePoe agreed, commenting: “The cream one is being too much and the black one is trying to make it back off.”

However, the vast majority could see no issue with Hannah Keates commenting: “That’s play. Only need to worry if their hackles make an appearance and they’re growling.” Emelap5 added: “Labradors love to wrestle—looks like they’re having the best time.”

Responding to the comments, Mable’s owner said wrestling matches of this kind are a “common occurrence” when they meet up, but they have been sufficiently reassured by the responses to the video.
