In a viral Reddit post shared in the Made Me Smile group, where people upload comments that are aimed at “uplifting” others, user u/dr_cubenis revealed some good news he had received at work.

He said: “I have no one else to tell, so I’m going to tell Reddit. I got a promotion today with a raise and being a single dad, this is huge for me. Much love and have a blessed day.”

The single dad’s post was praised online and received more than 96,100 upvotes since it was shared on Wednesday, July 13.

It also attracted more than 2,990 replies, many of which were overwhelmingly positive and complimented the man on getting a deserved raise at work.

The dad later told other Reddit users that he would take his 4-year-old son out for a proper celebration of pancakes for dinner at IHOP.

He thanked commenters for “making me feel like I’ve accomplished something” and added he has been touched by the experience.

One Reddit user said: “Great job. It sucks not being able to share your successes. I understand. Keep on kicking a**.”

Another added: “This is a great moment to celebrate and to show your son what it looks like to take pride in your accomplishments, an important life lesson for anyone. I hope the pancakes are amazing.”

A third commenter posted: “Congrats for real. These wins are huge confidence boosters and it’s always encouraging to see hard work payoff. Enjoy IHOP with your son.”

The employee also thanked Reddit users for their kind comments and said: “With this promotion and all these kind words, this has to be the best day of my life.”

According to the employment website Indeed, there are numerous things employees can do to try to get a raise.

These include the following suggestions:

Take initiativeMaintain a positive attitudeKeep learningSet goals for your careerSet reasonable expectationsSchedule a meetingCommunicate clearlyBe patientPick the right timeGet endorsements

Indeed recommends picking the right time to ask for a raise and to do so when there is some stability and calm in the company, as your manager will be more likely to listen to your case more patiently.

Also making a raise request after completing an important project could show your boss that you have proved your worth.

Another option would be to do it during your annual performance review as your employer would expect to have a conversation with you at this time.
