Although Malaysia U22 have beaten Singapore U22 earlier this year and the Singaporeans lost in their 2017 SEA Games opener to Myanmar, Young Tigers winger Syahmi Safari has remarked that their Causeway rivals must not be underestimated.
In March this year, Malaysia and Singapore both competed in the five-team Dubai Cup, and defeated their southern neighbours 3-1. And on matchday 1 of the 2017 SEA Games on Monday, hosts Malaysia defeated Brunei 2-1 while Singapore lost 2-0 to Myanmar. The Causeway rivals are set to square off on matchday 2 of Group A on Wednesday.
Syahmi only came on in the final 10 minutes against Brunei, but is likely to start against Singapore as replacement for right back Matthew Davies who is injured.
The Selangor youngster told Goal that despite their better form as compared to the Singaporeans’, the Lions can still threaten them.
“I’ve noticed the Singapore squad is comprised of many newcomers this time around, so they will be a different side.
“Anything can happen in football, we are not entirely sure of their tactics so we only need to focus on our gameplay and avoid underestimating them,” remarked Syahmi after the training with the team on Tuesday.
The match between Singapore and Malaysia will take place at the Shah Alam Stadium at 8.45 pm.
