To begin learning to knit, players will need to access the Build/Buy catalog and purchase a Yarn Basket, which functions similarly to a Woodworking Bench or Easel. Unlike those stationary items, however, the Yarn Basket can be carried about in a character’s inventory, permitting them to pull out their knitting anywhere and at any time.

Each knitting project will require a small investment of Simoleons to buy some yarn, and players can have several projects on the go at the same time, which can be paused and resumed at will. Initially, newbie knitters will start off with simpler projects such as beanies and socks, but they will gain access to more complicated patterns as their knitting skills grow. Items will include the requisite itchy sweater, baby onesies, plant cozies, and toys.

One interesting aspect of knitting in The Sims 4 is that those with a bit of expertise will unlock the Teach to Knit skill, which will allow Sims to share their love for knitting with others. And while those who haven’t quite mastered knitting can fail their projects and end up with some questionable results, truly ambitious Sims can sign up for the Lord (or Lady) of the Knits Aspiration. This will eventually result in the Sacred Knitting Knowledge trait, whose benefits have yet to be revealed.

The Sims 4 is available on OS X, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
