The biggest hinderance for a new Star Trek film is that its “family” would feel incomplete following the death of Anton Yelchin in 2016, according to Pegg. Yelchin played Pavel Chekov in the series next to Pegg’s Scotty, Chris Pine’s Kirk, Karl Urban’s Bones, and more.

Pegg said, “I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don’t know.” He mentions a Star Trek film in development with J.J. Abram’s production company Bad Robot and Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, but says “I’m as in the dark as everyone else.”

Though the future of Star Trek films is somewhat uncertain, television productions for the series are thriving as Pegg suggested. The MMORPG Star Trek Online is also currently active with a Year of the Klingon event.
