Iceland finished second in Group F on Wednesday, as they beat Austria 2-1 with a dramatic late goal to leapfrog Portugal and book a fixture with Roy Hodgson’s men.
Iceland’s achievement is made all the more remarkable by the fact that they have a population of just 323,000 people - 7,000 less than the city of the Premier League champions.
And Sigurdsson admits that nobody expects he and his team-mates to get a result against the Three Lions, though he hopes to cause an upset, and a few headlines in England.
“Yeah I think so. [our country is] the same size as Leicester,” he replied when asked by reporters if Iceland are underdogs against England.
He added: “We know they’re a very good team. Young and experienced. We’re the underdogs.
“We’ve played big teams before. Portugal, Holland, the Czech Republic and Turkey. We were calm and got the job done. We’ve got no pressure on us. If you look at England, if they lose to us there’ll be a few headlines back home in England!”
However, Sigurdsson accepts that England are due to hit their best form soon, having only qualified from Group B in second, following draws with both Russia and Slovakia and the sole victory over Wales.
“(There are) not many weaknesses. They’re a very good team and they got through a tough group without playing their best – that’s probably yet to come.
“We’ll have to defend for long periods against them but we’ve shown before that we’re capable of it.”
